“Chashama Gala: Avant Garden”

June 20, 2024

Chashama Gala & Art Party 2024

InfraSound welcomes you to our “Avant-Garden,” a space to sit, meditate, and listen. Enter our sonic meditation room while hearing a performance of Eva-Marie Houben’s Haikus for Three, performed by the InfraSound Ensemble (Yoshi Weinberg, flutes, Luke Paulino, voice, and Alex Gray, electronics and saxophones). This 45 minute performance will occur on the top of every hour. Audience members are welcome to sit and listen for as long as they need. We encourage Deep Listening™ (a practice developed by queer composer/performer Pauline Oliveros), allowing not only the sounds of the musicians, but the sonic environment surrounding them to become a part of the performance.

About the installation by InfraSound’s Artistic Director Yoshi Weinberg:

The “Avant-Garden” stems from the need to create a safe space for queer musicians in the heteronormative white racial frame of Western European classical music. Using over 1000 pages of old discarded classical sheet music, Weinberg wallpapered the entire room engulfing the audience and performers in an oppressive and striking visual. The garden of flowers and vines represents InfraSound’s mission to craft queer spaces for experimental art. The vines and flowers overtake the surrounding cavern of scores, bursting through the seams and breaking through what is typically viewed as a stuffy and classist musical environment.
